Which Bible Translation to Choose (Tips for Beginners)

Choosing a Bible translation can feel overwhelming at first. There are so many options, each with its own style and rhythm. But here’s the comforting truth—you don’t have to get it “perfect” the first time. The right translation is simply the one that helps you connect with God’s Word in a way that feels natural and meaningful to you.

If you love tradition and the beauty of older language

You might be drawn to translations like the King James Version (KJV) or the American Standard Version (ASV). They have a poetic flow and a sense of history that many people find deeply comforting.

If you prefer clear, modern wording

Look for translations that use everyday language while still keeping close to the original meaning, such as the New Living Translation (NLT), New International Version (NIV), or Berean Standard Bible (BSB). These can be easier to read and understand, especially if you’re newer to Bible study.

If you want deeper study and word-for-word accuracy

Consider versions like the English Standard Version (ESV) or New American Standard Bible (NASB). These stick closely to the original wording and are often used for more in-depth study.

How to decide

  • Read the same verse in a few different translations and see which one speaks to you most.

  • Think about your purpose—are you reading for deep study, easy understanding, or a mix of both?

  • Don’t be afraid to use more than one translation. Many people keep a “main” Bible for daily reading and another for deeper study or comparison.

I personally love changing versions every few years. Sometimes a fresh wording helps me notice something I hadn’t before, and that’s okay—it can even make your Bible reading feel new again.

God can speak through any translation. What matters most is that you open your Bible, spend time in His Word, and let it guide your heart and life. You can always change or add another translation as your needs and seasons shift.
